California Gold Rush Era, 1850 I/U 2nd Bill of Exchange Issued in San Francisco and Payable in NY One Month Before California Statehood San Francisco, California Territory. August 9, 1850. Issued 2nd of Exchange for $325, payable at Howland & Aspinwall, New York. Issued by Robinson Bissilo, Jr. in San Francisco. Allegorical woman, eagle and portrait of George Washington, with small sailing ship and train on the left, S/N 55, Mostly Fine to VF with stain on the left border area and small stains, and a small rea of ink or rust burn on the top middle margin. RWH&E. Extremely early California Statehood fiscal document and the earliest Gold Rush fiscal document we have offered. California became a state on September 9th. 1850 and was admitted to the Union as the 31st state. Gold was discovered in California on January 24, 1848 in Sutter’s Creek and this exchange was issued a little over 2 1/2 years later. Civil War 1862-63 Application for Prize Money for Ship Captures and Naval Discharge Papers New York, 1862-63. Lot of 4 pieces, Includes: September, 5, 1862, Discharge certificate for Charles A. H. Garbers, showing that he has been discharged from the U.S. Steamer “Augusta” and from naval service; Brooklyn, NY. August 8, 1863, Paperwork asserting that Garbers was an ordinary seaman on board the Augusta steamship when it captured the “Prize” ships the Aquila and Cambria, presumably enemy ships while he was a seaman on the Augusta; New York, 1876, Application for Prize Money for a Person Out of Service, stating that while Garbers was serving on the “Augusta” prize ships were captured, and he is entitled to a share of the prize money occurring from the capture of said ships on document witnessed by 2 of Garbers shipmates. The lot also includes an additional document calling for the payment of prize money dated August 8th, 1863 that was owed to Charles A. H. Garbers. All are in fine to VF condition with some archival reinforcement of light splitting along fold lines and other signs of wear. A significant artifact of the American Civil War. Scarce with so many additional supporting documents, all related to the same application and retired seaman. The second USS Augusta was a side-wheel steamer in the United States Navy during the American Civil War. She was named for the city of Augusta, Georgia. The prize ships mentioned in this lot are the Aquila, Cambria, and E. J. Waterman.
