In 1951, leadership at The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company changed following the death of longtime president John Augustine Hartford, who had led the company since 1916 and overseen its rise as the largest grocery chain in the United States. He was succeeded as president by Ralph W. Burger, a career executive who assumed control in 1951 and remained president through the 1950s.
