The group includes illustrated and engraved letterheads and billheads from a variety of firms, featuring factories, mills, warehouses, machinery, transportation scenes, and company buildings, along with handwritten and typed correspondence and business forms. Examples reflect industries such as iron and steel, distilling, varnish and chemicals, grain and commission merchants, machinery, lithographic printing, and banking. Items show period typography, decorative borders, vignettes, and company branding typical of turn-of-the-century commercial ephemera. American Express & Wells Fargo Financial Documents including A Daniel Butterfield Autographed Draft from 1858, ca.1850s to 1920s California & New York. Lot of 6 Financial and Remittance Documents, Includes: American Express Co. drafts and forms and Wells, Fargo & Co. banking and remittance drafts, consisting of handwritten payment orders, transfer drafts, and a later American Express money order highlighted by an 1858, Wells, Butterfield & Co. Sight Draft signed by Daniel Butterfield (1831–1901), who was a prominent American businessman, Union general during the Civil War, and assistant treasurer of the United States. He received the Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Gaines’ Mill, where he was wounded while rallying troops with a flag. He is best known for composing the bugle call “Taps” and was the son of John Butterfield, a co-founder of the American Express Company. Conditions range from Fine to Very Fine overall. Saratoga Springs, 1862, Civil War–Era Military Exemption Affidavit and Oath by Local Fireman. Saratoga, New York, 1862. Single folded manuscript affidavit submitted to the Town Clerk claiming exemption from military service under Chapter 477 of the Laws of 1862. The document states that J. B. Gilman was an active member of Engine Co. No. 2 of the village of Saratoga Springs, qualifying him for exemption based on fire company service. Signed and sworn, with official attestations and filing endorsement on the reverse identifying the document as an “Oath of Exemption.” A representative local Civil War–era draft exemption document.
