Lot of 7 Issued Railroad Payment Drafts and Vouchers from multiple lines including the Northern Central Railway Co., Pennsylvania Company operating the Erie and Pittsburgh Rail Road, Cleveland and Pittsburgh Rail Road, Allegheny Valley Railroad Co., and Cleveland, Mount Vernon & Columbus Railroad Co. Forms include engraved locomotive and station vignettes, manuscript completions, cancellation punches, and treasury stamps. These documents reflect late nineteenth to early twentieth century railroad finance and the internal accounting systems used for freight, payroll, and interline settlements. Lot of 13 Issued Fiscal Documents including Pennsylvania State Appropriation School Fund warrants from the 1850s to 1880s, a Northern Central Railway Co. treasurer’s draft, three issued checks of the Isdell Mercantile Company of Staten Island, an 1850s Hungarian Fund charity note, and an early nineteenth century Bank of America interest certificate. Together these items illustrate diverse financial practices across public education funding, corporate merchandising, railroad accounting, charitable fundraising, and early banking in the northeastern United States. All have black print with black border and are in Fine to VF condition with rough edges in a couple of areas, a small piece missing on top left border of the 25 Cent note, and tape remnants on the upper corners as well as toning, still a scarce set. Puget Sound Co-Operative Colony, ND (1887-1904), Obsolete Scrip Note. Washington Territory, ND (1887- 1904). 5 Cents Merchandise and Retail Coupon Scrip Certificate. PMG graded Choice Uncirculated 64 with comment “selvage included.” This utopian experiment in collective living was formed in 1887 and attracted several hundred adherents to land that the co-operative owned in the Port Angeles area. Members were progressive advocates of labor rights and were, oddly, anti-Chinese due to the Chinese participation in the local labor market. The Panic of 1893 killed both the lumber market and this colony which was finally officially dissolved in 1904. Your cataloger believes that these notes were used by co-operative members to purchase goods manufactured by the co-operative. The 5¢ is the approximate size of a large postage stamp and is identified only by the “P.S.C.C.” abbreviation.
