(5). The Excelsior Coal Company of Oskaloosa, Iowa operated its coal mines locally in southeastern Iowa, specifically in Mahaska County, centered around Oskaloosa and the surrounding coal fields. Oskaloosa was one of Iowa’s principal coal-mining centers in the late 19th century, with numerous shaft and slope mines operating immediately outside the city limits and in nearby townships.
