The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Building Company was incorporated in 1916 to construct and manage a permanent headquarters for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) — one of the oldest stock exchanges in the United States, founded in 1790. By the early 20th century, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange had outgrown its prior facilities and sought a modern structure befitting its growing importance in American finance.
