Southern Rail Road Co., 1858, Serial #1, I/C Stock Certificate, Previously Unlisted in Cox, Only Listed as a Bond.. Vicksburg......, Mississippi, 1858. 450 Shares I/C Capital Stock Certificate, Black printing with decorative black border, Overseer of slaves picking cotton on horseback at left; The Steamboat “Vicksburg-New Orleans” at right; and, portrait of man at center, locomotive at bottom center, S/N 1, Red “Cancelled - June 27, 1880)” written vertically at center, VG condition with a few small internal holes or tears, counterfoil on left and minor glue stains where the counterfoil is attached. The certificate is issued the Girard Bank of Philadelphia, signed by William C. Smedes as President, The back has a very long endorsement discussing the company, the shares, the railroad and dividends related to the railroad, all hand written by Smedes. The Southern Railroad Company was organized in 1846 to build a line from Brandon through Meridian to the Mississippi-Alabama state line, with William C. Smedes at the first president. The entire line was completed in June 1861. After the Civil War the company was reorganized as the Vicksburg and Meridian Railroad. On February 1, 1889, it was sold under foreclosure to the owners of the Queen & Crescent, and on March 18 was reorganized as the Alabama & Vicksburg Railway. TCC.
