New York & Utah Prospecting and Mining Company, 1867, I/U Stock Certificate Utah Territory (Inc. and Offices in New York), October 10, 1867, New York & Utah Prospecting and Mining Company, 1000 Shares, I/U stock certificate, S/N 100, ornate design with central vignette of a mining camp scene surrounded by forested hills, allegorical female figure at left holding a hammer, issued with attached 25-cent U.S. Revenue stamp at left, printed in black on gray underprint with decorative border, Mines were located in Utah Territory’s Little Cottonwood Canyon, where the company played a role in some of the earliest silver developments following the 1865–66 discoveries. Incorporated in New York in 1867, the New York & Utah Prospecting and Mining Company invested eastern capital into claims that later became part of the rich Alta district and was connected with the first smelting efforts in the canyon.
