Sinclair’s Lith., Philadelphia. This certificate deserves further research. It is Issued to and signed by Henry S. Fargo, possibly the cofounder of American Express and Wells Fargo. Also, the South Platte River was a major center of activity during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. Unlisted mine in Hollister. (Offices and Incorporated in Gold Hill, Nevada Territory), April 21, 1863, Evening Star Gold and Silver Mining Company, 10 Shares at $250 each, I/U stock certificate, printed in black and red on light tan paper, with ornate left border enclosing vignette of what appears to be a seated Abraham Lincoln with shield, central vignette of a mountainous mining landscape, S/N 64, a red 25¢ adhesive revenue stamp (a Bond, 25 cents, Part Perforated stamp) affixed at upper left; Mines located in the Argentine Mining District, Colorado Territory, the company was located in Gold Hill, Nevada Territory, but the mine was in Colorado, signed by the company president and secretary; VF to Choice VF condition or better. This is one of the earliest Colorado Territory certificates we have offered. It appears that 1861 is probably the earliest date of a Colorado certificate known, but this certificate from 1863 was issued only 2 years after that.
