Territory of Kansas....., 1857. 1 Share I/U Stock Certificate, Black print with multiple vignettes: allegorical Liberty at left, an eagle with shield at center, and a Native American holding a spear at right, Certificate is issued to Louise C. Denver, possibly the wife of Gen. James W. Denver, for whom Denver, Colorado was later named. Issued during the Kansas Territory land speculation boom, this certificate represents an early investment in the development of White Cloud, a Missouri River townsite near the Nebraska border. A highly desirable pre-statehood piece with possible direct ties to one of the most notable frontier families of the era. Ohio Bell. Red seal at bottom left corner. VF condition with some staining, and a hole at top margin. Alabama. $100 stock certificate. The certificate indicates that the company principal business was “…buying and selling real estate, hardware, farm products, fuel and other provisions…”. Organized in the years following World War I, the Ex-Soldiers Investment Industrial Company, Inc. was founded to provide returning American veterans with opportunities to invest in business ventures and industrial development projects during the postwar recovery period. Based in the 1920s spirit of veteran self-help and entrepreneurship, the company sought to channel the savings and bonds of former servicemen into manufacturing, construction, and small enterprise investments. The certificate is signed by D.B. Bell as president, whose name appears on most known issues. This certificate stands as a reminder of the economic optimism and civic-minded veteran initiatives that followed the Great War.
