William Waldorf Astor (1848–1919) was an American-born lawyer, politician, businessman, and member of the prominent Astor family. After serving in the New York State Assembly and Senate, he moved to England in the 1890s, where he became a successful newspaper proprietor and real estate magnate. Astor was naturalized as a British subject in 1899, and in 1917 was elevated to the peerage as the 1st Viscount Astor. The back is endorsed but signed by Stanly Field “for the estate of Joseph N. Field”. Joseph N. Field was an American businessman and corporate officer active in the late 19th century. He served as a trustee, director, or executive in a number of railroad, insurance, and financial companies during the post–Civil War industrial boom. By the 1890s he was well established in corporate circles, appearing on stock and bond issues as an officer or signatory. Field’s career reflects the generation of financiers who helped manage the rapid expansion of transportation and utilities in the United States at the turn of the century.
