Tricolor printing with blue frame and titles highlighted in red; ornate border with patriotic motifs including a seated Liberty at left and U.S. flag at right; central vignette of a sailing ship at sea; bold “UNASSESSABLE” across center; left margin with red 25¢ U.S. Internal Revenue stamp; certificate text states “Incorporated November 4, 1864,” capital $20,000 divided into 4,000 shares of $5 each, No. 61, issued Nov. 22, 1864. Organized at the height of San Francisco’s mid-19th- century treasure-and-guano fever, the company proposed expeditions to Cocos Island in the eastern Pacific—long rumored to conceal pirate caches (the “Lima treasure”)— while also prospecting for commercially valuable guano deposits, a commodity in global demand for fertilizer; such firms were common on the Pacific Coast after the 1856 Guano Islands Act and the Gold Rush, blending maritime outfitting with speculative finance, and most never realized their grand promises, leaving their striking certificates as the chief survivors of the craze.
