The company was founded by the Clarke brothers in 1897 as The Pittsburgh Motor Vehicle Company, this small industrial firm initially produced a three-wheeled tricycle and the “Pittsburger” motorized carriage. By 1900, they introduced the Autocar—a chain-driven, single-cylinder runabout with just 27 units produced. In 1904, Autocar models featured four-passenger seating and optional tonneau covers, with a retail price of $1,700. The company moved to Ardmore as it expanded, and by 1907, began manufacturing trucks, focusing on innovation such as the standardized driveshaft and the left-side driving position, which became a global standard. Autocar’s truck offerings grew, starting with a 1½-ton delivery vehicle, followed by 2- and 5-ton platforms with more powerful engines. They introduced the popular “cab-over” engine design and the Blue Streak inline six-cylinder engine, along with other advancements like enclosed cabs, proprietary axles, and a four-wheel-drive system. At its peak in 1929, the company delivered 3,300 units, but production dropped significantly during the Great Depression. By 2010, Autocar was solely focused on truck production. Est. $200-350 Scripophily - Aviation California & Michigan 301 301 CA., MI.
