Kentucky and Delaware Lottery Ticket Assortment ca.1833-1863. Covington, Kentucky; New Castle, Sussex County, Delaware, 1833– 1863, Group of 5 Lottery Tickets. Includes: Kentucky State Lottery “Extra” quarter tickets, Covington, KY, dated October 31, 1863 (Shelby College benefit) and May 19, 1863, each with bold class and combination numbers, signed by Wm. & J.E. Simms; Kentucky Extra State Lottery, Frankfort benefit issue, August 30, 1863, quarter ticket, signed by J.K. Gregory; Consolidated Lottery, New Castle, Delaware, quarter ticket, dated 1833; and State of Delaware, Sussex County Lottery, quarter ticket, dated May 27, 1844, Wilmington. Each printed in distinctive colors with ornate typographic layouts, bearing large stamped combination numerals across the face. This is a diverse and historic grouping of antebellum and Civil War-era lottery tickets from 2 different states, illustrating the widespread use of lottery financing in support of schools, civic institutions, and public projects before the practice was largely abolished in the late 19th century. Condition is attractive overall, most pieces showing sharp print detail and bold overprints, VF to AU condition or better. Highlights include a large group of fantasy “Unified Space over America – Moondust Certificates,” styled as $100 banknotes and depicting comedian Henry Youngman alongside the Apollo 11 astronauts (approx. 15 examples); U.S. small-size notes including a $2 Legal Tender (1953 series), several $1 Silver Certificates (1935 & 1957 issues), and $1 Federal Reserve Notes; a Philippines One Peso emergency issue note from the Japanese occupation during World War II; 19th-century checks and drafts including Broadway Bank (New York) and other handwritten banking documents from the 1870s–1880s; municipal pay warrants from the City of Charleston, South Carolina, for $10 and $5, both with revenue stamps and endorsements; advertising and exposition scrip including a cigar “Exportation” advertising certificate with statesman vignette, a Builder’s Emporium (California) $1 merchandise certificate, wooden nickel certificates from Michigan, and other promotional paper issues; California Auto Livery & Taxicab licenses; a Lithuanian- language theater or concert ticket; a Lumbermen’s National Bank item dated 1884; and an early shipping permit slip. Conditions range from VG to XF, with circulated notes and checks showing expected wear, and most novelty or advertising issues crisp. An eclectic and fascinating grouping combining U.S. currency, worldwide issues, obsolete financial instruments, and mid-20th-century fantasy and advertising notes. A significant and wide-ranging assemblage of Southern-related ephemera and financial documents spanning the Civil War through the early 20th century. Included are Confederate States of America Banknote Identification note facsimiles; an 1860s Savannah, GA bank check with U.S. Internal Revenue stamp; early Georgia correspondence and envelopes; and a detailed late 19th century mining survey map from Cherokee and Forsyth Counties, GA. Complementing these are railroad and express company materials including Louisville & Nashville Railroad items such as a ca.1890s timetable booklet, issued passenger tickets, and receipts; Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway conductors’ waybills, Railroad Passes, statements of earnings, and tickets; Seaboard Air Line receipts bearing revenue stamps; a Southern Express Company 1892 shipping contract with imprinted revenue; and related material from the Atlantic Coast Line and Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Collectively, this lot provides an outstanding look into the commercial, financial, and transportation networks of the Southern states during the post–Civil War reconstruction and industrial expansion era.
