Lot of 7 silk “Blood Chits” issued by the U.S. Air Force between 1951 and 1968, designed as safe conduct passes for downed pilots in Europe, Latin America, Korea, and Vietnam. Each chit measures approximately 10 x 16 inches and bears the American flag (examples show both 48- and 50-star versions), with multilingual printed pledges requesting food, shelter, and protection in exchange for government reward. Languages represented include Persian, Turkish, Finnish, Serbo-Croatian, German, French, Swedish, Arabic, Greek, Polish, English, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, Slovak, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Hungarian, Thai, Laotian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Malayan, Indonesian, Chinese, Modern Chinese, Tagalog, Visayan, and Dutch. Texts vary slightly by theater of use but generally state: “I am an American… I need food, shelter and protection. Please help me and my government will reward you.” Four examples were used in Europe, one in Latin America, one during the Korean War, and one during the Vietnam War.
