Connecticut Pay-Table Office, 1781-82 Tax Pay Order Trio Hartford, Connecticut, 1781-82. Lot of 3 Issued Tax Pay Orders from the Pay-Table Office. Black text with black handwriting and signatures, The trio includes multiple signatures from Early Connecticut notables who were members on the Pay-Table (also known as the Committee of Four). They managed Connecticut’s military finances during the Revolutionary War. Financing the Revolution laid a heavy burden upon each colony, especially those which balked at levying taxes. In order to meet immediate needs, such as wages, the colonies relied upon wealthy revolutionists, foreign loans, and taxes and gifts from abroad. Issuing notes such as these was only a temporary solution. Some of the signers include Fenn Wadsworth (1750/51-1785) was a brigade major to General James Wadsworth from 1776 to 1779. He fought in many battles during that time, but his failing health forced him to leave active service. Wadsworth stayed in Connecticut’s government, as shown by his membership to the Pay-Table Committee; WilliamMoseley (1755-1824) who later would serve in the Connecticut state senate, and was also the Director of the Hartford National Bank from 1797 to 1815; Jedediah (or Jedidiah) Huntington (4 August 1743 - 25 September 1818) was an American general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he served in numerous civilian posts; and, Oliver Wolcott Jr. who was an American politician and judge. He was the second United States Secretary of the Treasury, a judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit, and the 24th Governor of Connecticut. All are in VF condition. (3).
