Pick A118e, S/M#H176-4. PMGChoiceVery Fine 35 China, 1857 (Yr. 7), 5 Taels, P-A118e S/M#H178-4, Issued banknote. An impressive example of the large-format Qing Dynasty Board of Revenue issue denominated 5 Taels, dated to the 7th year of Emperor Xianfeng (1857). Printed in black with extensive vermillion overprints, including large red seal stamps and character annotations. Central panel with detailed Chinese script surrounded by an elaborate blue border featuring traditional design motifs; large vertical text at right margin, denomination “伍兩” (Five Taels) prominently displayed. Serial number 42655. PMG graded Choice Very Fine 35, a desirable mid-grade survivor of these scarce Tael notes, which circulated during a turbulent period of the mid-19th century Taiping Rebellion. Despite their large size and fragile paper, this note retains strong detail and vibrant red seals, making it an exceptional representative of this historic early Chinese issue. This denomination was issued over a period of 5 years beginning in 1853. Only 1 example could be found having been offered at auction over the last 10 years and that was by Stacks Bowers in 2022, during the height of the China banknote and coin market, where it sold for $14,000, with a lower grade designation of PMG 25.
