Lot of 2 Specimen Bonds: 1951, $1000 1.8% Series A General Public Improvement Peoples Coupon Bond, Black with Orange border and underprint; 1952, $1000 2 1/4% Series A General Public Improvement Peoples Coupon Bond, Black with brown border and underprint. Lot of 2 I/U Loans, Includes: 1861, $1000 6% Loan with red underprint, S/N 408; 1872, $6,450 6% Loan, S/N 459. Both have the same vignettes but in different locations except both have arms of PA at top center, Bonds are in Choice Fine to VF condition and cut cancelled, ABNC. (2).Large format engraved $1,000 bonds related to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s “Loan of 1861.” The first, dated 1861, is printed in black with a bold red “1000” overprint across center, featuring the Pennsylvania state seal flanked by allegorical figures at top, with side portraits and an eagle vignette below. The second, dated 1872, references the Loan of 1861 and is printed in black with ornate border design, allegorical vignettes at bottom, the state arms at top center, and side portraits of statesmen. Both bonds represent Pennsylvania’s effort to raise funds during the Civil War to supplement federal borrowing, providing critical financing for the Union cause at the state level. These impressive designs reflect the high- quality engraving of the period and the patriotic symbolism used to inspire confidence in government securities.
