Joseph Emerson Brown (1821–1894) served as Governor of Georgia from 1857 to 1865, the longest tenure of any governor in the state’s history. A strong advocate of secession and states’ rights, Brown often clashed with Confederate President Jefferson Davis but remained instrumental in directing Georgia’s war effort, including issuing bonds such as this to raise funds. After the Civil War, he briefly supported Reconstruction, later returned to the Democratic Party, and served as Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court and as U.S. Senator (1880–1891). Brown remains one of Georgia’s most significant and controversial political leaders of the 19th century. Est. $130-260
