Standard Oil Company, 1875 I/C Stock Certificate, ITASB Charles Pratt, Also Signed by John D. Rockefeller and Henry M. Flagler. Cleveland, Ohio. March 31, 1875. 100 Shares I/C Stock Certificate, Capital Stock $3,500,000, 35,000 Shares at $100 each. Black on cream paper with ornate border; central vignette of the U.S. Capitol dome; allegorical figure of Liberty at left; bold “STANDARD OIL COMPANY” title across the top. Issued to Charles Pratt of New York for 100 shares, with original stub still attached noting payment of $10,000. Hand-signed at bottom by John D. Rockefeller as President and Henry M. Flagler as Secretary, both signatures in bright red ink. Also signed on verso by Charles Pratt and his son C.M. Pratt, dated April 5, 1882, authorizing transfer of shares to H.M. Flagler, Jr. Certificate is printed by Maverick, Stephan & Co. Cleveland, Ohio. This remarkable certificate links three of the most important figures in U.S. industrial and petroleum history— Rockefeller, Flagler, and Pratt—during the early years of Standard Oil, just prior to the formal creation of the Standard Oil Trust in 1882. Standard Oil certificates with this combination of signatures and direct issue to Charles Pratt, whose Astral Oil Company merged into Standard Oil in 1874, are considered among the most significant American financial documents. The certificate remains well preserved with strong ink and bold signatures; cancellation is by large red pen cross across face. Condition ranges from VF to Choice VF+, with fold marks and minor handling.
