Republic of Texas, 1837, Issued Military Warrant. Houston, Republic of Texas, July 18th, 1837. $33.46 I/U Warrant Issued to John F. Hollien for his service in Company A 1st Regiment Regular Infantry in the Republic of Texas Army, Back of the note reads “paid to the sheriff of Austin County in payment of taxes” signed by John York. John York (1800–1848) moved to Texas in 1822, settling near San Felipe de Austin and receiving a land grant in Austin’s Colony in 1826. He quickly gained prominence as a leader in expeditions against Indians and during the Texas Revolution was appointed first lieutenant in the regular infantry, later serving as captain of cavalry under William B. Travis and participating in the siege of Bexar. After independence he became sheriff of Austin County, received land for his service, and later helped found Yorktown in DeWitt County, named in his honor. In 1848 he was killed alongside his son-in-law in the Battle of Escondida Creek, and in 1936 the State of Texas erected a marker at his grave. ������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� Est. $450-750 Rhode Island 307 307 RI. Printed in black with a simple left-side decorative border and clean typographic layout, lacking the elaborate allegorical vignettes seen on later issues; issued to John Pitman and Peter Pratt as trustees for Martha A. Waterman and hand-signed by the cashier, dated April 3, 1840; established in the early 19th century to serve Providence’s mercantile and industrial communities amid growth driven by textiles, shipping, and trade; the condition ranges from Choice Fine to VF condition or better.
