The Tombstone Mill and Mining Company was central to the silver boom that transformed Tombstone, Arizona Territory, from a frontier camp into one of the West’s most storied mining towns. Formed after Ed Schieffelin’s legendary silver discovery, the company built the stamp mills that processed ore from rich claims like the Tough Nut, fueling a rush of investment and the rapid growth of Tombstone and nearby mill towns such as Charleston and Contention. Its success attracted powerful Eastern financiers, whose capital brought both prosperity and speculation. Though water problems and falling silver prices eventually doomed large-scale operations, the company’s role in Tombstone’s meteoric rise left an enduring mark on the history of Western mining and the lore of the American frontier. Est. $130-260 California 620 620 CA.
