Vignette engraved by James Smillie for the National Bank Note Co. depicts great American wooden paddle liner ‘Adriatic’ later chosen as the central design for the twelve cent postage stamp issue of 1869. Portrait of George Washington commissioned for the Continental Bank Note Co. in1879 by an unknown engraver who took inspiration from the Athenaeum portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796. The Stuart portrait appeared on a number of US stamps including the 10 cent stamp printed in 1855 by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. Uncirculated, ABNC. International Ocean Telegraph Company, 1883-84 Unique Approval Proof Pass. Florida. 1883-1884, Proof message Frank or pass printed on india paper, Black on large bordered white paper, approval date and signatures at bottom, AU condition. Very possibly unique. ABNC. The International Ocean Telegraph Company was incorporated in December, 1865, with plans to lay extensive overland and submarine cable to connect the United States telegraphically with Central and South America, beginning with Cuba. Union Army Civil War general William “Baldy” Smith was named as president. The company was successful in its Cuban venture and connected Washington D.C. with Havana in September 1867, via Punta Rassa and Key West in Florida. By 1873, the Cuban line was handling more that fifty thousand messages a year and the company was booming. ������������������������������������� Est. $90-160
