Lot of 2 Tax Pay Orders Issued by the Pay-Table Office, Black print with black handwriting and signatures, Both have signatures from early Connecticut figure Oliver Wolcott Jr and Eleazer Wales. Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760- 1833), who was the second United States Secretary of the Treasury, a judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit, and the 24th Governor of Connecticut. Eleazer Wales was a graduate of Yale and Presbyterian Minister who also later served as a Justice of the Peace in Hartford. He remained involved in state politics, acting as State Controller after the war. Lot of 2 Tax Pay Orders Issued by the Pay-Table Office, Black print with black handwriting and signatures, One issued to Oliver Wolcott for 2 Pounds, 10 Shillings, and 6 Pence; the other to the Isaac Spencer for 3 Pounds, 2 Shillings, and 11 Pence. Both have signatures from early Connecticut figure Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760- 1833), who was the second United States Secretary of the Treasury, a judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit, and the 24th Governor of Connecticut. The Pay-Table (also known as the Committee of Four) managed Connecticut’s military finances during the Revolutionary War. Financing the Revolution laid a heavy burden upon each colony, especially those which balked at levying taxes. In order to meet immediate needs, such as wages, the colonies relied upon wealthy revolutionists, foreign loans, and taxes and gifts from abroad. Connecticut Comptroller’s Office, 1790, I/C Payment Pair Hartford, Connecticut, 1790. Lot of 2, I/C payments of “Lawful Money out of any Funds appropriated for the Payment of interest on the liquidated Debt of the State of Connecticut.” Both were issued for 1 Pound with Black text and simple black scroll work border, cut cancelled at center, one was also signed by Abraham Husted, who in the American Revolution, served as a Sergeant under Captain Matthew Mead in the 9th Connecticut Militia regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Mead. He died on 9 June 1819 in Greenwich, Connecticut, and both signed by Ralph Pomeroy as Comptroller, S/Ns 8593 and 9220, Both are in Fine to VF+ condition. Ralph Pomeroy was a notable figure in the late 18th century, serving as the Comptroller of Connecticut in 1790. His career began with significant military service during the American Revolutionary War, where he held positions such as first lieutenant and Deputy Quartermaster General for Connecticut. Following the war, Pomeroy engaged in mercantile and manufacturing activities in Hartford. Despite his attempts to secure federal appointments, including requests to George Washington, he remained active in state roles, notably managing Connecticut’s finances as Comptroller, where he oversaw state debt payments and other fiscal responsibilities​.
