Hartford, Connecticut, 1781. 24 Pounds 5 Shillings “Lawful Money” I/C Treasury Office Note issued by the Connecticut Treasury Office, to be repaid to David Warner of Saybrook at the rate of 6%. Black print and handwriting, S/N 3165, Cancelled at center. Signed by John Lawrence as Treasurer. John Lawrence (1719-1802) served as treasurer of the Connecticut colony, and later as the Connecticut State Treasurer from 1769 to 1789, spanning the crucial period of colonial rule, through the American revolution, and into the early years of the United States. During the Revolutionary War, Lawrence was commissioner of loans for the new nation. VF condition with small piece missing from top margin. This certificate has the first mention of the United States on any currency. Black print with black handwriting and signatures, both issued to Ralph Pomeroy for various sums of “Lawful Silver Money........granted by the General Assembly in May last, and charge the State.” Signed by early Connecticut figures such as Fenn Wadsworth, William Moseley, and Oliver Wolcott Jr. Fenn Wadsworth (1750/51-1785) was a brigade major to General James Wadsworth from 1776 to 1779. William Moseley (1755-1824) later would serve in the Connecticut state senate. He was also the Director of the Hartford National Bank from 1797 to 1815. Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was the second United States Secretary of the Treasury, a judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Second Circuit, and the 24th Governor of Connecticut. Fenn Wadsworth (1750/51-1785) was a brigade major to General James Wadsworth from 1776 to 1779. Jedediah Huntington (1743-1818), was an American general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he served in numerous civilian posts. Fine-VF condition.
