Robert (Bob) Morris Signed First of Exchange Draft, dated November 3rd, 1795,. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. November 3rd, 1795, £1150 Sterling, First of Exchange issued to Mr. John Nicholson, payable in London, with the date April 22nd, 1796 written below Morris’s signature. Black printing with dark brown ink, Ornate counterfoil on left with fancy lettering “Robt. Morris”, S/N 20, Superb “Morris” signature on lower right, Draft payable by “William Temple Franklin, Esq.”, William Temple Franklin, Benjamin Franklin’s grandson, had spent a considerable amount of time abroad as secretary to his grandfather and as a land agent for Robert Morris. The exchange draft is payable to John Nicholson who was Morris’s partner in the North American Land Company (N.A.L.C.), much of the Pennsylvania land John Nicholson and Robert Morris put into N.A.L.C. came from land given to Revolutionary War Veterans. John Nicholson (d. 1800), financier, businessman, comptroller general of Pennsylvania, anti-Federalist pamphleteer, land speculator, and publisher. Nicholson was born in Wales, emigrated to Philadelphia prior to the American Revolution, and engaged in a variety of business enterprises, including button, iron, and glass manufacturing and real estate developments. He later became the partner of Robert Morris in land speculation and development. With Morris he promoted the development of Washington, D.C., and formed the Asylum Company involving hundreds of thousands of acres on the Susquehanna as a haven for French refugees.
