Coady & CO., Whaling Vignette, 1859, I/C 1st of ExchangeDraft Honolulu, S.I. (Hawaiian Islands), January 28, 1859. $3000, I/C First of Exchange, from R. Coady & CO., Honolulu, Light purple vignette and text on very light blue Paper, Vignette of Whale being harpooned and whaling boats and sailors floating next to the dying whale, the exchange was in payment for supplies for the “Bark Wavelet”, the location on the exchange is “Honolulu, S.T.”, short for Sandwich Islands, the name was changed to the Hawaiian Islands in 1840 but evidently, it was still referred by whalers as the “Sandwich Islands”. The exchange was issued by Captain George Swain for provisioning the 300 Ton New Bedford whaler “Wavelet”. This was the only whaling voyage she made, but it was a successful and prosperous one, returning 2714 barrels of whale oil and 34,133 pounds of bond. Coffin, Captain of the Ship Alabama and payable to Thomas Spincer from John H. Shaw Esq., Nantucket. The exchange is mostly intact with areas of either mouse or insect damage with small areas missing on the top right, and few small areas in the middle and on the bottom part of the exchange. All whaling exchanges are rare, some include outstanding whaling vignettes, unfortunately, this one doesn’t. The following story and headline was found in the Sydney Morning Hearld, NSW, on Monday, August 28, 1865: WRECK OF THE BARQUE ALABAMA AT THE CHATHAM ISLANDS. ALL HANDS SAVED. The following letters to the United States Consul at Lyttelton, were written by Captain Coffin, at Port Hutt, Chatham Islands, dated July 10th and 23rd, 1865, referring to the above wreck - “Sir, - I regret to acquaint you with the loss of the whaling barque Alabama, of Nantucket, Mass , under the following circumstances, and which I shall thank you to publish through the medium of the Press. Upon May 17th last we entered Petro Bay, bound to Port Hutt, but in consequence of head winds and night coming on, I was under the necessity of anchoring at Waitanga. On or about Saturday, May 20th, it blew a furious gale from the......”. The article describes the condition of the crew and the communication with Nantucket. Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, 1858. $2000 Issued First Exchange, Without S/N, Black print with spectacular whaling vignette at top center, Ornate “Thomas Spencer, Honolulu, Sandwich Islands” border and design at left, Counterfoil attached at bottom. This First Exchange was issued to Captain William Watson for the sum of $2000 “for value received in necessary supplies furnished at this port for the Bark Winslow,” a shipping vessel under Master Watson’s command. VF-XF condition especially for its age. Bark Winslow was in commission for 54 years, according to Old Dartmouth Historical Sketches. Thomas Spencer was a whaling captain who landed in Hawaii (then the Sandwich Islands), and became a notable businessman and member of society.
