Tanner, Kearny & Tiebout, ND (ca.1817-22) Early Proof Advertising Note. Philadelphia, PA. “Specimen of an Improved Method of Engraving Bank Notes”, by Tanner, Kearny & Tiebout, Seated allegorical woman by shoreline with ship in the background, “Patent” in left counterfoil, Printed thin India type of paper mounted on thin manila card. Uncirculated with extremely light foxing. This three-partner imprint was very short-lived, but in that period the firm engraved and printed some beautiful banknotes. Benjamin Tanner may have studied with Peter Maverick and created some large plate engravings of War of 1812 scenes. Francis Kearny, supposedly the nephew of hero Commodore Lawrence, went back into private engraving in 1820. Cornelius Tiebout studied in London with James Heath. An India paper proof, printed to thin, wide margined card stock by Rogers & Estler (their imprint under the frame line). Flanking are oval dies with “T.K.& T.” left and “B.N.E.” at right. One of the earliest engraving company sample notes known.(Ex - Eric P. New Orleans, Louisiana, ND (1828-1831). Lot of 2 Proof Checks or promissory notes, one in French and one in English, both without any Banking information. Includes English version with vignette of Mercury at bottom, Cut corners, printed on thick pink paper; and, the French version, with a vignette of Marianne at bottom, also with cut corners, and printed on white India paper. Checks range from VF to AU condition. (2). Freeman Rawdon founded his first engraving and printing firm in 1825, with just his name. In 1828 he partnered with Neziah Wright to form Rawdon, Wright & Company of New York City. On March 1, 1832, Rawdon partnered with his brother to form Rawdon, Wright, & Hatch which maintained the name until 1847 when Edson moved from New Orleans to New York.
