September 23, 1873. $5000, Clearing House Committee of the Philadelphia Bank Remainder Loan Certificate, these were issued during the Panic of 1873, S/N 10097, Black text with POCs at bottom right, AU to Uncirculated condition. Lot also includes a New York Clearing House (Associated Banks) Pamphlet featuring a black and white illustration of the NY Clearing House, Back with black text featuring information on the building and its construction, VF to AU condition. The Panic of 1873 was a financial crisis that triggered an economic depression in Europe and North America. The effects of the depression lingered for two decades and was known as the “Great Depression” in the United States until the 1929 stock market collapse. Black print with green underprint, Allegorical female Liberty with U.S. Arms at center, counterfoil at left, blue undertint on back with endorsement space. Archival date on bottom in black handwriting: October 28th, 1879. 0000 S/Ns in red, POCs, “Payable in United States Gold Coin” overprinted vertically in red at center, and a purple specimen overprint near bottom right. Danforth, Wright & Co., imprint (Evidently this is a pre-1860 design used at a later date). Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson imprint on back. Appears CU but there are light vertical folds between the note and the counterfoil on the left as well as 2 very light archival handling folds on the right margin. Rare, stunning and missing from most advanced collections. DF&C (ABNC). Oakland Clearing House, 1907 Issued Panic Currency Banknote Oakland, California, 1907. $1 Issued Certificate from the “Clearing House Committee of the Associated Banks of Oakland California”, S/N 38962, Black print with orange-brown underprint. Ornate brown design on back. Fine condition. Printed by the Union Litho Co. San Francisco. This certificate was issued as a result of the Panic of 1907, a financial crisis caused by a significant drop in the New York Stock Exchange and a subsequent run on banks.
