25 The New England Courant, No. 80, 1723 (Reprinted in 1856)

Facsimile of First Paper Printed by Benjamin Franklin.

Boston

Massachusetts, 1856, Single sheet, printed on both recto and verso,

measuring circa 8 1/2 by 12 1/4 inches. “Facsimile of the first Paper

ever issued by Franklin and now printed (Sept. 17, 1856) on a press

once used by him”. 2 pages printed on light beige paper, Franklin

discusses the reasons and purpose for the paper and what the pa-

per will report on. Though it is a reprint, it is from Franklins original

printing press from 1723 and a copy of his first historic news paper

that he released for the public. Discusses news from England, a

speech by the King discussing a foreign conspiracy (in Europe) and

also a few small advertisements. Interesting, historic and rare even

as a reprint. VF condition. ��������������������������������������������������Est.

& Silver Mining Company”.

California, 5 page official copy of Cer-

tificate of Incorporation. The corporation was formed for silver &

gold mining in Amador County, California. Large gold foil seal on

front page signed by A.A.H. Tuttle, Secretary of State of the State

27 Wells, Fargo & Co. 1858 Trio of Checks with Wells Fargo Col-

lection Envelope & Instructions.

San Francisco, California and

Louisville, Kentucky. 1858, Lot of 4 items. Includes Collection en-

velope with 3 checks, all are issued in San Francisco, payable to

Wells, Fargo & Co. All 3 checks (amounts of $1666.66, $1666.67,

and $1666.67) add up to $5000 and all were unpaid, printed in black

on light blue paper with steamship, sailing ship and locomotive on

left counter design, All in VF-XF condition. The envelope contains

a number of ink notations, including the total sum of the checks

($5000) as well as remarks such as “no commission” and “Mr. Shreve

says he has no money for this purpose”. An interesting gold rush era

Ireland to New York.

San Francisco, July 31, 1861, Lot of 2 items.

Wells, Fargo & Co., “California and NewYork Express and Exchange

Co.”, Original Certificate for Passage, A number of remarks on re-

verse. Accompanying original envelope with the same dates indi-

cates this was sent from James Shauky at BroadwayWharf to John

and Bridget Purcell and requested Steerage passage for (six?) from

NewYork to San Francisco. It appears the origin of the trip began in

Galway, Ireland. Rare Wells, Fargo & Co. Document and first time

seen by cataloger. Choice Fine Condition. �������������������������� Est.

First of Exchange, $145.50, S/N 581, Black on thin blue paper with

ornate “1” counterfoil on left, ornate title, payable at their offices in

San Francisco,VF condition with small tear and stamp hinge repairs

on reverse. Also included is a handwritten confirmation letter for

the same bill of exchange letterhead of “Office of wells, Fargo &

Co., NewYork & California Express & Exchange Co.”. ��������Est.
