Front Royal, Virginia. September 10, 1861, 6 1/4 cent, Issued
obsolete scrip or banknote, S/N 238, paper with light blue ruled
lines, PMG graded Very Fine 25, intact with no edge problems
and 3 large and one ample margin, rare note in any condition. No
sale records can be found for the 6 1/4 cent note. Spink-Christies
sold 3 higher denominations in 1996 for $900+. This may be
the only one of this variety available. From a recent Mid-West

Washington, D.C. Lot of 4 notes (2 uncut sheet of
2notes), 18xx (printed originally in the 1850-60’s, this sheet is
ca.1970’s), $20-50, (DC-365-G6a; G8a), Modern “Proprietary
Proofs”. The $20 proof has portraits of distinguished men on lower
left and right and capital building in middle. Notches on left and
right margins for printing registration. Black printing with green
underprint counterfeit protectors, printed on thin white card, Also
included is the underprint proof in black instead of green. All are
Choice to Gem Uncirculated condition. ABNC. Archival
“Proprietary” proofs rarely seen in sheet form. . . . . . .

Gryphon, seated Plenty on cornucopias and Mercury, Large even
margins, Black printing with no underprint printed on thin white

Obsolete Banknote.
Racine, Wisconsin, July 15th, 1858, $2, Racine
& Mississippi Rail Road Co. (WI-686-SC8). Issued Obsolete Note.
Farmer, sailor and hunter hold counter with ‘2’ at left; ornate medal-
lion counter with ‘2’ at right. S/N 433, Choice VG to Fine condition
due to toning and small edge faults on bottom left margin, This
issuer was formed on March 29th, 1856, as a result of the business
combination of the Racine and Mississippi Railroad Company and
the Savannah Branch Railroad Company, and after a series of com-
binations and divestitures, ended up as part of the Chicago,
Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific lines. All of these scrip issues are
rare; this is an issued example from the $125,000 issue which pro-
vided the bearer a call on the income earned by the segment of the
road built between Beloit and Freeport. R-7 in Krause where a
remainder of this note was in his collection. Rare and possibly
