149 James Fenimore Cooper Autograph on Otsego County Bank
Check.
Cooperstown, May 2nd, 1845, Issued and handstamp can-
celled check made out to John Colbar for $14.50. Signed J. Fenimore
Cooper on bottom right. VF to XF condition, Framed under glass
which has not been disturbed. The age of the framing is difficult to
determine, but the check seems to not be glued fully to the backing
but maybe only small areas of adhesive or tape may be holding it.
Cooperstown was founded by J. Fenimore’s father. James Fenimore
Cooper was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th
century. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The
Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece.

Sonoma, California, January 31st, 1876m Issued check for $75 to
Vallejo and signed by him. Vallejo was chosen to be one of eight
California members of the Constitutional Convention held in
Monterey in 1849. Early native Californian born in 1807 in Monterey
County. He helped found Sonoma California. . . . . . . . .

151 “ Boss “ Tweed Autograph on National Broadway Bank Draft.
New York, NY , October 31st, 1868, Issued check for $166.66 issued
to and signed by William M. Tweed ( “Boss Tweed “) for salary as
supervisor. Blue on white with New York Arms on top left, XF con-
dition. William Magear Tweed Boss Tweed, was an American politi-
cian most notable for being the “boss “ of Tammany Hall, the
Democratic Party political machine that played a major role in the
politics of 19th century New York City and State. Tweed’s greatest
influence came from being an appointed member of a number of
boards and commissions, his control over political patronage in New
York City through Tammany. Tweed was convicted for stealing an
amount estimated by an aldermen’s committee in 1877 at between
$25 million and $45 million from New York City taxpayers through
political corruption. He died in the Ludlow Street Jail.

1868, 20 Shares, Issued and uncancelled stock certificate, black on
white paper, Imprinted Revenue RN-T4 in middle, Arms of NY on
upper left, curved title, signed by William G. Fargo as President,
Cert.# 121, the stock appears in XF condition but the left middle
margin has a 2/3rd’s inch tear that could be easily repaired. Rare
Fargo as well as Imprinted Revenue Stock Certificate.

Autographed legal document in regards to bankruptcy. Revenue
stamp attached. Oakes Ames well documented involvement with
the Credit Mobilier caused one of the greatest political scandals in
the nation’s history at that time, reaching as high as the Vice-

154 Letter to Governor of Virginia Regarding Leniency to Falsely
Accused Black Ship Steward.
Richmond, Virginia, November 11,
1845, Manuscript 2 page letter from J.C. Rey to the governor of
Virginia, Governor Mc Dowall. Vf condition with light foxing, 7.5 by
9.8 inches, A black ship steward, Henry Boyer, who was not a slave,
was accused of helping a slave escape from the schooner Cornelia
and was imprisoned for this in Virginia. The letter pleads with the
governor to release him due to his innocence and that he was a mar-
ried man with 4 young children, and he would never have broken the
law or had any interest in anti-slavery or abolitionist movements
and was a man of “below ordinary intellect among the negroes “.
